Zero Movie Review: An Average Film With Extraordinary Performances

You must have read and heard it many times lately that Zero is one of the most-awaited films of the year. Even before its release, the internet was flooded with fake reviews of Zero. But it is the most important film of the year, too. Important for superstar Shah Rukh Khan who has a lot riding on it. It is important for Katrina Kaif as well, who is still trying to come to terms with the massive failure of her recent release, Thugs Of Hindostan (2018). So, does the film fulfill the promises it made with its well-received trailer and chart-busting songs? Let’s find out.

What Is The Film All About?

Meerut-based Bauua Singh (Shah Rukh Khan), a vertically challenged man with a height not measuring more than four and a half feet, is ridiculed by almost everyone in the town. Even his father Ashok (Tigmanshu Dhulia) does not leave any opportunity to get on his back and curse him for being a good-for-nothing son. Bauua is 38 and still unmarried. He wants to tie the knot soon because the biological clock is ticking super-fast.

One fine day, at a matchmaking agency in Delhi, Bauua chances upon the picture of a girl called Safia Yusufzai Bhinder (Anushka Sharma). Unknown to her background and physical condition, he lands in a school to meet her, only to get surprised to see a wheelchair-bound girl with cerebral palsy.

Aafia is a scientist working on a mission to send humans to Mars. Initially hesitant, Bauua tries his best to woo her and succeeds in winning her over in no time. However, an unexpected and unplanned meet with India’s biggest movie star Babita Kumari (Katrina Kaif) changes the course of his life forever. Will Bauua Singh leave Afia for Babita Kumari? What destiny has in store for Afia and Bauua’s love story? Watch the movie to know more.

What Stands Out In Zero?

It happens more often than not that when a superstar works on an ambitious project, his superstardom ends up eclipsing other vital aspects of the movie instead of enhancing them, leaving the film with no soul of its own. Thankfully, it does not happen with Zero. The Aanand L Rai directorial is a beautiful love story that really pulls on the heartstrings.

Talking about performances, Shah Rukh Khan as Bauua Singh delivers one of his career’s best performances. Despite Bauua Singh’s brashness, rudeness, and weakness in hours of the emergency, you fall for this beautifully written character almost instantly. It is going to be an indelible performance by the megastar. Zero relies on Khan’s craft as an actor more than anything else, and director Aanand L Rai successfully gets the best out of the star.

Anushka Sharma is perfect. She lives her character throughout and enhances the film with her convincing performance. Katrina Kaif is a complete surprise in the flick. She gets a brief role to play, but she owns it like a boss. She will be remembered for playing this part for a long time. The supporting cast also does its best. The film has been shot beautifully and the background score is outstanding.

What Fails To Impress?

The film suffers from its lazy writing and editing, especially in the second half. The first half is taut, crisp and entertaining. But the movie derails in the second half and never returns back on the tracks. There are many things in the film, which the director did not deem important to explain, for example, the power Bauua Singh. Where did he get it from? Even if you spend the whole your life, you will never find the answer.

Everything that happens with the vertically challenged man Bauua Singh happens so easily and he crosses every hurdle so comfortably that you feel he is not a common man from Meerut and that some magical power has been bestowed upon him. The sheer absence of logic in a film which has a character who is a scientist is ludicrous. Aanand L Rai and writer Himanshu Sharma needed to have more sittings together to come up with a logical narrative.

Final Verdict

Zero is not the best film Shah Rukh Khan has done in his glorious career. But despite its flaws, its weakness, the honesty in the performances of all the actors will unfailingly tug at your heartstrings. Go with zero expectations and you may like it in bits and parts.
