You might have heard of prisoners’ jail term being reduced for reasons such as good behavior and/or extraordinary contribution in work done by them, but perhaps never for singing a song! But this happened recently in the Yerawada Central Jail of Pune.
The star cast of the upcoming movie ‘Lucknow Central’ was at Yerawada Jail on Tuesday to celebrate the 71st Independence Day of the country. ‘Lucknow Central’ is slated to release on September 15 this year. The team met the prisoners in one of the biggest jails in the country and inspired them to not lose hope and dream big.
On this occasion, the cast of the film, that includes Farhan Akhtar, Deepak Dobriyal, Diana Penty and Ronit Roy, performed for the inmates of Yerawada Central Jail. Farhan Akhtar stole the show by winning the hearts of the prisoners with his songs ‘Rock on’ and ‘Zindagi na milegi dobara’. He also announced that he would love to get a special screening of the film organized for prisoners after procuring the necessary permission from the authorities and the producers of the film.
In the middle of all this, something happened that became a reason of immense cheer for one of the inmates of the jail. When Nitin Arore, a prisoner at the jail sang old Hindi song ‘Abhi na jao chhod kar’, in front of the star cast of ‘Lucknow Central’, the jail authorities, and more than 3000 prisoners of the jail, everyone was left spellbound by his singing prowess.
Swati Sathe, DIG of Yerawada Jail was so impressed by Nitin Arore’s singing that she announced a waiver of 2 months in his term during the program itself. And this is how the singing skills of a prisoner helped him get his jail term reduced.
