When the Indian women’s cricket team reached the finals of the ICC Women’s World Cup, they hoped of winning the championship and returning home victorious. They performed extraordinarily in the finale against England but unfortunately could not walk away with the trophy.
It was a close finish with England defeating India by 9 runs, however, this loss, in no way undermines the hard work of the Indian team. It was the ultimate chance for senior players like captain Mithali Raj and Jhulan Goswami to bring the cup home, but it could not happen.
Even though the team could not achieve victory in the final match but will always be remembered for their passion and performance in the game. With their remarkable performance throughout the series, the team changed the perception and attitude of the entire country towards women’s cricket. Moreover, they proved the talent and capabilities of women cricketers to the entire country.
Harmanpreet Kaur, who scored a whopping 171 runs in the semi-final match against Australia, spoke about the team’s loss in the finals. OneIndia.com quotes Harmanpreet saying,
We were all crying after the match. Even those assisting our team were crying. We all contributed with some speeches and messages. But then our support staff said nobody will cry when we reach the hotel. We then celebrated by eating dinner together. I’m really proud of my team because this has been my best moment and this is the best cricket we have played. Now, it’s like we lost enough, now we just want to keep winning. Which city you are from doesn’t matter, what matters is what your thinking is. A dream has come true, a dream to play good cricket. Proud that we have made our country’s flag fly high.
Well said Harmanpreet! The entire country is proud of the fact that the women’s cricket team did its best!
