A woman clerk posted in Bilaspur Railway Zone got surprise of her life when she received a show cause notice by Indian Railways as she refused to sing a duet with the general manager (GM) of the zone at his farewell “get-together”.
The woman has to sing that song with Bilaspur Zone general manager Satyendra Kumar who is retiring by the end of this month.
The Divisonal Railway Manager issued a notice on January 17 to the woman stating that the South East Central Railway (SECR) General Manager wanted to sing a particular song.
However, the woman refused to sing it since she was unprepared for it.
The Railways in its notice said that since the woman was appointed under cultural quota and hence could not refuse to perform when clear instructions had been given by DRM, Raipur.
The notice mentioned the woman’s refusal as a failure to “maintaining devotion to duty” and her conduct as “gross misconduct.” The notice also said this showed her irresponsible attitude towards work and DRM has taken a serious view of the incident.
However, the notice created a stir among the Railway staff and a Railway spokesperson hinted that it would be withdrawn.
Now, Railway employees unions say they will raise the issue with National Women’s Commission. However, the notice has been withdrawn after the furore.
