The Netherlands have been buying renewable energy from countries in EU and has been using gas-powered plants to make up for the shortage.

The Dutch train companies, like NS, have been working with energy companies like Eneco to get train systems on 75 per cent wind power in 2016 and to 100 per cent by 2018. However, the goal was met a year in advance.

India can surely learn a lesson here. Though it might take time and investment, getting the railways on renewable energy will not only prove to be cost effective but will also drastically lessen the dependence on non-renewable sources.
