Legendary actress Sridevi gave everyone the biggest heartbreak when she passed away in Dubai on February 24. Her husband Boney, daughters Janhvi and Khushi along with other family members, paid their last respects among a sea of followers when she was laid to rest. Her countless fans and colleagues paid their last respects to the actor at Mumbai’s Celebrations Sports Club, where her mortal remains were kept, and was followed by her funeral at Vile Parle Seva Samaj Crematorium.

The cine superstar was once bestowed with the esteemed Padma Shri award by the UPA in 2013. Due to her stellar performances and versatility as an actor par excellence, she was conferred with the highest civilian award by then president Pranab Mukherjee at a ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhawan’s Darbar Hall.

Keeping in lieu with her status, the Maharashtra government laid her to rest with full state honours on Wednesday. They decided to give her a legendary farewell, with the Mumbai Police band performing in full view of her immediate family members and laying the tricolour on her peaceful soul.

Dressed in her favourite red and golden Kanjeevaram saree in a glass casket which was covered with white flowers, she looked peaceful in her death. From the images gathered, she wore a red bindi and mangalsutra, two iconic symbols of a married woman, and Sridevi was a happily married one.

However, soon there was a debate among Tweeple about her body being draped in the tricolour. The gesture left people confused as they believed she was not a martyr. This is how they reacted:

However, it’s important to give peace to these doubtful people and put an end to their arising questions. Firstly, it was definitely not the decision of the Kapoor family to do so. It was the Maharashtra government’s sole decision only.

According to the official book, a state funeral is accorded only to current and former Prime Ministers, current and former union and state ministers. The rules have taken a change and now it’s the discretion of the state government to accord a state funeral.

In a state funeral, the flag shall be draped over the bier or coffin with the saffron towards the head of the bier or coffin. The flag should not be lowered into the grave or burnt in the pyre.

The first state funeral in India was accorded to Mahatma Gandhi. However, state funerals over the years have been the discretion of the state government. The government takes into consideration the contribution made by the person in the field of science, cinema, literature, law, politics etc.
