The game of chess originated in Northern India that later spread to Persia. The history of this game of intellect goes back to about 1500 years. However, the modern tournament began only in the 2nd half of 19th century.
Earlier chess followed the rules of the Indo-Arabic origin. However, during the transition from medieval world to modern world, the rules got modified. Presently, the rules of the ‘international chess’ are followed across the globe.
Amidst this transformation, one thing remained constant, the color of the chess board and pieces. By color, we do not mean the physical color itself but the fact that, in chess, there are always two colors. One of them is of a darker hue and the other one lighter.
Though black and white are often the most commonly used colors, other hues are also used. The chess pieces come in all kind of texture and make. The chess board is also designed in the combination of a darker and lighter color.
The question still remains, why chess pieces are often referred to as the white and black. White and black are the two primary colors which make the identification of the different chess pieces easier. They are also the opposite colors. Use of these colors stands as a universally accepted name for the chess pieces.
According to the rule of chess, the player who moves the first piece is called ‘white’ and the second one is referred as ‘black.’ Also, the lighter shade of the chess board is called ‘White Squares’ and the darker one is called ‘Black Square.’ The color terms ‘Black’ and ‘White’ are not literal. They are used for distinguishing the opponent parties playing the game.
