A woman with a child in a Metro. She is the least alarming person in the coach, right? If your answer is in ‘yes’, then, my friend, you need to listen to what the CISF has to say.
The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) has released data for 2016 which shows that 91 per cent of the 479 pickpockets they apprehended in the Delhi Metro are women. That’s a phenomenal 438 women!
According to the CISF, the women pickpockets have a defined modus operandi – they’d either carry a child with them or be in groups.
Because most men and women in India do not feel alarmed by women with kids, the ruse works well.
All these women were apprehended in more than 100 operations conducted in the Metro in Delhi and NCR.
And what makes matters worse is that there seems to have been no reduction in their numbers over the years.
In 2015, 93 per cent of pickpockets apprehended were women. In 2014 the percentage was 94. In 2012, around 90 per cent of those caught were women. In any year, the number easily surpassed 300.
You have been warned.
