The Maharashtra Assembly on March 16 unanimously suspended All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) MLA from Mumbai, Waris Pathan, accusing him of disrespecting the country, after he said he would not chant ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai‘ even at the cost of his life.
The BJP supported the action, even saying that such persons “should be expelled from society”.
Pathan’s views come after MIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi said, “I don’t chant that slogan. What are you going to do, Bhagwat sahab…I won’t utter that (slogan) even if you put a knife to my throat.” Owaisi had said that the Constitution does not mandate any one to chant the slogan.
Owaisi’s remark has stirred a hornet’s nest in the Maharashtra legislative assembly. The legislative assembly promptly closed ranks and passed a resolution suspending Pathan for the remainder of the on-going budget session.
Pathan later claimed at a presser that he was not given the opportunity to present his case in the assembly. The BJP-Sena MLAs were at the forefront to denounce both Owaisi and Pathan.
Here’s who said what about the row:
