If you are a Delhite, and a University student then you must be aware of the very famous Virgin Tree Puja. The ceremony is organized by the students who hail from The Hindu College. The tree upholds great significance, as they become devotees and worship it. Their belief? Well, they simply want a girlfriend within six months. College students, especially boys (hostelers) gather around the famous tree; they worship a suppositional entity- Damdami Mai.
Interestingly, the seniors decide on the goddess which is generally envisioned as a leading B-wood heroine or a model. The tree is adorned with the posters of the diva and balloons as well. The decorations further include ribbon and the branches of the Virgin Tree are also “adorned” with water-filled condoms.
In a media report, a DU student was quoted as saying:
“It is a very old tradition and over the years it has become an identity and culture of our college. It was started in the 1953. All students, especially newcomers want to witness this Puja”.
Another student mentioned:
“The truth is that it is commemorated to spread awareness about the sexually transmitted disease, HIV and sex education among the students”.
However, it seems that some female students are discontent with this “age-old tradition”. As for them, it corresponds to male desperation and misogynism; hence they are asking to ban it. The report indeed suggests that a couple of female students had an open discussion in the pretext of elevating objections regarding the ceremony.
Another student who happens to be from the pol science division has labeled the objection as an attempt to attempt which aims at politicizing the matter. He said:
“Every year we celebrate this Puja. We wait for this event for the whole year. Students, who are affiliated with the left student wings are against it. They want to ban us from celebrating it, but they themselves say whatever they want to in the name of freedom of speech and expression no matter how obscene that would be”.
There is also a special chant that is recited during the aarati. Check it out:
Whereas another student who happens to be a part of Internal Complaint Committee of Hindu College has mentioned that the lyrics of the aarti ( song during the puja) are quite obscene. What are your thoughts? Share with us in the comments below.
