The two maestros, Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag, have been the most destructive opening batsmen of their era. Between 2002 to 2012, they have opened 93 innings together.
The historic pair together has played 12 hundred-run partnerships and 18 fifty-run stands. The two have the highest opening stand of 182 runs in ODI cricket.
Their distinctive styles complemented each other and the two became one of the legendary opening pairs in Indian cricket history. Recently, during a session at ‘Agenda Aaj Tak’, Sehwag recalled an incident when Sachin Tendulkar got stumped for the first and only time in his cricketing career only because of Sehwag.
It was a match between India and England. Both Sehwag and Tendulkar were facing the attacks of England spinner Ashley Giles. While Sehwag was able to counter Giles variation attacks with his feet, Tendulkar was mostly padding.
Since Tendulkar was struggling during the match, after a few overs, Sehwag went up to him and advised him step out and charge against the England spinner to play his shots. Seeing the condition of the pitch the idea made sense and Tendulkar got convinced with Sehwag’s advice.
But, Sehwag’s advice backfired. The moment Tendulkar decided to step out of his crease against Giles, he got stumped.
What happened next is here in Sehwag’s own words…
I was stepping out and easily hitting my shots. He was mostly padding. I said there is no spin, you can charge and play. It took me 2-3 overs to convince him. The only ball that turned was the one on which he stepped out of crease and was stumped.
He further added,
I did not go back to dressing room that day at tea break. I sat in umpires’ room. I was called in later. Tendulkar said only once in my career I have got out stumped in Test cricket and that’s because of you
This is how Sachin Tendulkar got stumped during a test match for the first and only time in his cricketing career.
