India’s cricket captain, Virat Kohli is one of the most famous persons in the country, but how does the great batsman fare in India’s social media space?
Social Media has become a significant part of the Indian way of life, with a recent study projecting that there will be almost 450 million social network users in the country by 2021. Hence, many Indian celebrities take to various social media platforms to update their fans on the latest happenings in their lives.
There are quite a few social media sites around, but the most popular with Indian celebs are Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Our celebrities have some of the best social media following in the world, which is hardly surprising, given the huge fan base they enjoy from India’s large population.
Cricket superstar, Kohli boasts some of the most impressive numbers on social media, but is he the most famous social media celebrity in the country?
If this was a run chase, you’d confidently put your money on Kohli on any of the betting sites in India, but this is a very different kind of contest. The Indian captain is not up against the guile of James Anderson or the pace of Mitchel Starc; instead, he is battling against Prime Minister, Narendra Modi and the best of Bollywood. Now, that is some serious competition!
We now examine how Kohli fares on each of the big three social media platforms.
Kohli has plenty of catching up to do on Twitter, as he is currently ranked way back in the sixth position on the list of most followed Indians on Twitter. The Indian captain has 36.5 million Twitter followers, a long way behind Prime Minister Modi’s 59.7 million. The PM is the most followed Indian on Twitter, and he has got a sizable lead over the chasing pack.
Bollywood legend, Amitabh Bachchan is a distant second with 43.3 million followers, while Salman Khan (41.2 million), Shah Rukh Khan (40.7 million) and Akshay Kumar (37.7 million) round out the top five.
Facebook is the most popular social networking platform in India, with over 300 million Indians registered on the site. It is highly interactive, and gives celebrities a wonderful avenue to connect with their fans. The great thing about Facebook is that it has users from all age grades and social backgrounds, unlike some of the newer sites which are dominated by the younger generation.
Kohli performs a lot better on Facebook than he does on Twitter, boasting 42.7 million followers. The 31-year-old is the third most followed Indian on Facebook, behind former Miss World, Priyanka Chopra and Prime Minister Modi.
Kohli is a lot closer to the top on Facebook, as he is less than 5 million followers behind Bollywood star, Chopra, who leads the field with 47 million, while PM Modi is a very close second on 46.1 million. It is very tight up there!
We have deliberately saved the best for last. This is where Kohli really flexes his muscles! The Indian captain is heads and shoulders above everyone else on Instagram, where he has amassed 68.1 million followers. Chopra is second with 54.8 million followers, while Deepika Padukone (50.4 million), Shraddha Kapoor (50.4 million) and Alia Bhatt (47.9 million) and are the other celebs in the top 5. The Prime Minister is way behind in this one, managing “only” 44.9 million followers.
Combining Facebook, Twitter and Instagram…
The different Indian celebrities have their different strongholds, but when we combine the numbers from the big three social media platforms, Virat Kohli has the edge with a cumulative 147.3 million followers across board. The cricketer is significantly boosted by his heavy following on Instagram, making up for the ground he concedes on Twitter. His Facebook is right up there among the very best in the country.
Kohli isn’t only winning cricket matches for India; he is also winning social media!
