On 11 December’2017 millions of hearts were broken when actress Anushka Sharma and cricketer Virat Kohli broke the news that they got married in Italy and that would be holding reception ceremony in Delhi and Mumbai in coming weeks.
The news not only managed to create huge waves across media but the plush Tuscany wedding remained in news for weeks after the wedding.
Just like the wedding, the two receptions too were a grand affair as it was attended by many bigwigs including Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
While the news of their wedding and reception had finally started to die down, it now seems new rumor has started that state the couple might have to marry again as they don’t hold a valid marriage certificate as per Indian laws.
What’s more, rumor has it that to get the much-required certificate, they might need to remarry again.
While the couple is yet to comment on the rumor, at present the newlywed is busy in their respective careers with Virat leading the Indian team to a series in South Africa and Anushka shooting for the upcoming film ‘Zero’ opposite Shah Rukh Khan.
There is another marriage Act under which they could have gotten married, The Foreign Marriage Act, 1969. This Act makes provisions relating to marriages of Indian Citizens outside India.
The act states,
“The Central Government by way of notifications in the Official Gazette shall appoint such diplomatic Officer may deem fit as a Marriage Officer. Diplomatic Officer means an ambassador, minister, envoy or other diplomatic representatives or a Counselor, etc. In order to solemnize marriage under this Act, one of the Parties at least should be the Citizen of India. This marriage should be solemnized before the so called Marriage Officer in foreign countries.”
