Vinesh Phogat is an Indian female wrestler who have famous cousins like international wrestlers Geeta Phogat and Babita Kumari. The 23-year-old wrestler from Haryana has quite a few accolades to her credit. Vinesh Phogat’s first international medal was at the 2013 Asian Wrestling Championship where she won a bronze. Then, she went on to win silver at the 2013 Commonwealth Wrestling Championship. In 2014, Vinesh Phogat represented India in 48 kg freestyle wrestling category at the Commonwealth Games and won the gold. In the same year, the wrestler won the bronze medal at the Asian Games.
However, in the year 2016, an unfavorable phase set in for the young wrestler as she lost the quarterfinals to China’s wrestler owing to a severe knee injury. At that time, it was speculated that the injury could bring Phogat’s wrestling career to an end.
But the girl did all her best to recover from her injury and get back to wrestling. And after a gap of almost two years, Vinesh Phogat returned to the ring in 2018 and proved herself yet again at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games by winning the gold. But what she has done most recently has created a historical moment in wrestling for India.
By winning the gold medal at the ongoing Asian Games, Vinesh Phogat has become the first female Indian wrestler to win the gold medal at the Asian Games. Vinesh Phogat beat Japanese wrestler Yuki Irie in women’s 50 kg freestyle wrestling category to bag the gold.
It is interesting to note that Yuki Irie is the same wrestler who had defeated Vinesh Phogat at the 2015 Asian Championships as a result of which Phogat ended up getting a silver. Also, that match proved to be a turning point for Vinesh’s wrestling career as the silver she won was the last international win for her before she had her knee injury.
But now, Vinesh Phogat is all back with a bang and has proved her potential to the world. At the ongoing Asian Games, first, she defeated Daulatbike Yakshimuratova of Uzbekistan at the semi-finals with technical superiority (10-0) in mere 75 seconds.
Then, she grabbed the gold by beating Japan’s Yuki Irie after dominating the fight completely with an initial lead of 4-0 and then taking it to 6-0. Here are some pictures from Vinesh Phogat’s historical victory moment:
