Mostly it is the guy who picks the gift for his girl or significant other. In Japan, it is the girl who gifts her partner. However, the gesture is answered with a return gift that comes after a month.

When we talk about unusual Valentine’s Day traditions, then the mention of this country is a must. Wondering why? This is one of the most romantic destinations across the world and naturally, the couples in this place celebrate Valentine’s Day with passion and enthusiasm. On this day the young girls pin the name of their lovers on their sleeves and roam around for everyone to see.

Be it cookies or cards, you will often find the images of pigs on different things sold for Valentine’s Day. The reason is nothing else than the fact that pigs are believed to the symbol of luck and lust in Germany.

The country of romance can never be behind when it is about celebrating Valentine’s Day with total gusto. Isn’t it so? One of the traditional practices on this day of love was loterie d’amour, or “drawing for love.” In this, the men and women used to go to the house opposite to their lovers and call out the name of the person they love. It also saw men leaving women if they weren’t satisfied. The unmatched women, in the end, would gather around a bonfire to burn the images of the men who rejected or wronged them. Also, they would hurl swear words towards men. Once a fun tradition, it is now banned in France as it eventually became uncontrollable.

 

5. England

 

 

Besides exchanging gifts and cards there is one special tradition that people in England follows. On Valentine’s Day eve, the women place five bay leaves on their pillow. They place four in each corner and one on the center. It is said that the bay leaves help the women dream about their future husbands.
