In a historic and progressive move, the US Supreme court on Friday ruled that the Constitution guarantees a right to same-sex marriage, reports IrishTimes.
The decision, which was the culmination of decades of litigation and activism, was celebrated with joy all over the country. Justice Anthony M. Kennedy, who wrote on behalf of the court, said:
“The hope of gay people intending to marry is not to be condemned to live in loneliness, excluded from one of civilization’s oldest institutions. They ask for equal dignity in the eyes of the law. The Constitution grants them that right.”
Soon after the decision, the White House turned into the Rainbow House in honor of the Supreme Court’s ruling.
Congratulating the nation on the decision, President Barack Obama said that “this ruling is a victory for America”.
Hundreds of gay rights supporters celebrated outside the courthouse with whoops and cries of “U-S-A!” and “Love is love”as the decision came down.
