From Anti-Romeo squad to sending away ceremonial kits to newlyweds, the state government of Uttar Pradesh is entering into close quarters with its denizens. Couples that are about to get married in UP will become the first ones to receive a one of a kind shagun from the state government.
The UP government is going to gift condoms to newly married couples in a bid to promote family planning. The scheme has been made under Mission Parivar Vikas which will be launched on World Population Day, July 11, 2017. Neighborhood ASHA workers will be distributing the kits which contain emergency contraceptives, oral contraceptives, etc.
The community of ASHA (Accredited Social Health Activist) has been given the job of approaching the new couple and handing over the “nayi pahal” kit for newlyweds. It will also have information brochures to educate and explain the importance of family planning.
Avneesh Saxena, project manager, Mission Parivar Vikas, elaborated about the contents of the kit to Times of India,
A pack of towels and handkerchief, nail-cutter, comb and mirror set that will come handy to both the groom and the bride.
The kits would be presented by ASHA workers and they will brief couples about everything. They will also help clear doubts that may follow after the couple reads the document or it has been read out to them.
With 204.2 million people, UP is the most populated state in the country. The health department aims to explain the basics of family planning such as the minimum gap between two children, safe sex, etc. The initiative came into effect on July 1.
The decision of the UP Government is being applauded for being a responsible one. As we are well-aware of the hooliganism against unmarried couples in the state, the interest of authorities in the well-being of new couples is noteworthy. The decision of giving away condoms and information on sex has been deemed bold and needful.
