For the first time ever, the United Nations building in Manhattan, New York celebrated the Hindu festival of light, Diwali. The UN headquarters was bathed in a sea of blue light. The outline of a diya (lamp) with the words ‘Happy Diwali’ prominently displayed.
India’s ambassador and permanent representative to the UN, Syed Akbaruddin, shared an image of the UN building on Twitter:

Even the President of the UN General Assembly tweeted a picture of the building.
Light over darkness, hope over despair, knowledge over ignorance, good over evil – the UN lights up. Happy Diwali! pic.twitter.com/muA23nFWZZ

Many in New York were seen taking photos of the beautifully-lit building.
Though the UN declared Diwali as a non-meeting day in 2014, it is the first time that the UN building has been lit up for the festival of lights.
