Uma Bharti stirred a hornet’s nest on February 10 by claiming that she had rapists tortured before the victims.
Addressing a rally in Agra as part of the upcoming elections in Uttar Pradesh, Bharti said, “The rapists should be hung upside down and beaten till their skin comes off. Salt and chilly should be rubbed on their wounds, so that they scream for their lives. That is what I had got done in one case when I was chief minister.”

Bharti was the chief minister of Madhya Pradesh from 2003 to 2004.
She was referring to the Bulandshahr gang rape incidents that took place in 2016. Bulandshahr is 158 kilometres from Agra.
Reports quote her saying that she went against the police to torture the culprits because they were ‘danavs’ (demons) undeserving of human rights.
“Their heads should be cut off like Ravana’s,” Bharti said.

She said that she had told the police to let the victim woman watch the torture of the rapist from outside the window of a lockup.
Bharti, who is the Union Minister for Water Resources and Ganga Rejuvenation, has been bitterly critical of the Akhilesh Yadav government for its failure in dealing with alleged rapists.
