In a sad incident in Mandi, Himachal Pradesh, two National Institute of Technology (NIT) students were found frozen to death near the snow-clad Shikari Devi temple.
The two students had gone missing on January 6 and their bodies were found on January 13, a week after they disappeared.
The two students, Akshay Kumar and Navneet Rana had not told their parents about this trip and had left from NIT Hamirpur campus only telling a friend about their trek.
Their friends and parents got worried as they did not show up for five days and after their parents visited the NIT campus the search operations began on January 13 morning.
Their bodies were found later that day near the snow-clad Shikari Devi temple which is about 150 km from Manali.
The two were being searched by a 40 member search team and a chopper who had were pressed into action after the parents informed Mandi police that the two students had been missing.
“We collected call details of the students. Police, with the help of local mountaineers and residents, launched a search operation on Friday morning.” – Local Police
In the last few days, the temperatures in the region have dropped down to around -15°C for more than a week.
While one of the bodies found near the temple was identified as Akshay’s from an ID-card in his bag. The other body couldn’t be identified, but officials suspect it’s Navneet.
It is still not clear whether the two were climbing to the temple or were on their way back. The two bodies have now been taken for autopsy and would soon be handed over to the parents.
