In its March 20 ruling, the Supreme Court diluted the provisions of the SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Act saying that the government servants can’t be prosecuted without the approval of the appointing authority, and private citizens too shall be arrested only after an inquiry under the law.

The ruling invited the wrath of the Dalit community, which staged massive protests, culminating in a nationwide shutdown on April 2. The agitation took a violent turn as protesting mobs vandalised public and private property and clashed with the police. Nine people were killed in the violent protests.

Transport, internet and mobile services remained affected in many states including Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, due to the protests.

Due to the ongoing clashes in Jodhpur and other parts of Rajasthan, sub inspector Mahendra Chaudhary suffered a heart attack while he controlling the crowd. It was discovered that he suffered multiple injuries as well during the protests.

Interestingly, Congress chief Rahul Gandhi came out with full support to Bharat Bandh through his tweet:

The demise of the sub inspector has created uproar on the social media and Twitterati questioned Rahul Gandhi’s support for the protest in lieu of the increasing casualties and death tolls in the protests.

However, there are many who are agitated against the Modi government for being so passive during the course of the Bharat Bandh.
