The death of 18-year-old Paresh Kamalakar Mesta has raised the tensions in the coastal town of Honnavar in Karnataka’s Uttara Kannada district. The boy belongs to a place called Thulisinagar and went missing following communal clashes between the two communities for 2-3 days. As per media reports, Mesta tried to escape from stone pelting by a mob belonging to a particular community. While the search was on, his body was found near a lake in Honnavar in that district on the night of December 8 under mysterious circumstances.
BJP lawmaker Shobha Karandlaje tweeted that he had been castrated, his head was cut open and boiling oil was poured on his face before he was thrown into the lake.
SP under #SiddaramaiahRule has declared this as ‘Samaanya Saavu’

The TOI reported: “Police suspect that he might have accidentally fallen in the lake while escaping from a rioting mob, and died.” The report also talked about Paresh’s relatives alleging that he was abducted and murdered by the members of another community. They said there was no chance that he would drown in the lake since Paresh belonged to the fishermen community, and was an expert swimmer.
The tensions in the area got heightened when rumours suggested that there were injury marks on his body.
Meanwhile, BJP’s Karnataka leadership had called for a shutdown in Kumta and Karwar towns on Dcember 11 to protest the alleged killing of Mesta. The party had also called for protests in Bengaluru and New Delhi.
Dakshina Kannada MP Nalin Kumar Kateel has demanded that NIA take over probe of Mesta’s death. He said there have been several instances of killings of BJP workers under the Siddaramaiah regime in Karnataka and people neither have faith nor confidence that state law enforcement and investigating agencies will ever bring their killers to justice.
Hundreds of people took out a funeral procession carrying Paresh’s body. Union Minister Anantkumar Hegde, who was also part of the procession, accused the state government of indulging in partisan politics.
