We live in a world and time where social media has become the most powerful way to express ourselves. Moreover, every social media user, whether a celebrity, a politician or a commoner, has equal power and right to express themselves on this platform. But these merits of social media have turned into demerits for a lot of users, particularly public figures who are trolled every now and then, and a number of times for wrong reasons.
This recently happened with Bollywood actress Richa Chadha when she raised her voice in the rape case against former union minister Swami Chinmayananda. The actress had shared a news clip from a newspaper which mentioned that Yogi Adityanath government has decided to withdraw rape case against Swami Chinmayananda.
For the uninitiated, a FIR against Swami was lodged in November 2011, on complaint of a girl who had lived in his ashram for several years. She alleged that she was kept in an ashram in Haridwar and raped by the former minister. While Adityanath government has withdrawn the case, the victim has written to the President, the Chief Justice of India, the UP Governor, the Chief minister and the district judge expressing her objection over the move.
Actress Richa Chadha too raised her voice for justice for the victim with a satirical remark on the government. Here is what she had tweeted:
Dear govt, plz change #BetiBachao to #BetiHumHiSeBachao.Your MLAs are making a mockery of your slogan.A victims father is killed in jail?Don’t claim to be #Hindu. You don’t view women as Goddess forms,so end this hypocrisy NOW! #JusticeForAshifa #VarnikaKundu pic.twitter.com/rpA2dPH5eP

However, this did not go well with many Twitter users who started slamming her even for standing with a rape victim. Take a look at some replies on her tweet below:

Dont single out few incidents to undermine the efforts of the govt. It is the result of sustained govt efforts that there is a change in public mindset. Remember gender equality is still a dream and your tweet is deolorable. Any person is innocent till proved guilty. Shame on u.

At the same time, there were many social media users who supported Richa’s point and applauded her for raising her voice. Their comments can be seen below:
