Taking a progressive step, Union minister Ramdas Athawale wants reservation for transgenders in government jobs.
“They (transgenders) are also humans and they should be given reservation,”he said.
He says that quota for transgenders can be fixed on lines similar to quota for disabled.
“The quota for transgenders should be fixed similar to what is fixed for the disabled,” he said. There is three per cent quota for the differently-abled people.
The transgender community in India is socially excluded and face discrimination in many fields including education, healthcare facilities and employment.
In 2016, the government introduced Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Bill in Lok Sabha during the Monsoon Session. The bill aims to provide equal rights to transgenders. It was earlier reported that the government was planning to transgender under the Other Backward Classes (OBC) category, however, the suggestion was rejected by the National Commission for Backward Classes (NCBC).
For now, the bill has been referred to a parliamentary panel, which has further asked public for suggestions.
