7. Marine Engineering and Research Institute (MERI), Kolkata
One of the oldest marine engineering colleges in India, it is also one of the best. At Marine Engineering and Research Institute the courses offered are a four year pre-sea Bachelor’s degree program in Marine Engineering and a Diploma Course in Nautical Science. An entrance exam (CET) is conducted by the Indian Maritime University (IMU). MERI also has a branch at Mumbai, which offers a one year pre-sea PG Diploma in Marine Engineering and a three year pre-sea B.Sc in Maritime Science admission.
6. Chennai School of Ship Management (CSSM), Tamil Nadu
Established in 1998 as Marine Engineering College, Chennai School of Ship Management offers a three year course for undergraduates as well as Diploma or B.Sc holders but only on the basis of their +2 aggregate. This course is called Alternate Training Scheme (ATS); in the first and third year, students get theoretical and practical training in the campus while in the second year students undergo training on-board for 9 months as a Trainee Marine Engineer, which the institute arranges for each student. After completing the ATS, an exam is conducted by D.G. Shipping, Government of India, clearing which one can enter the market with a 9 month on-board experience.
5. College Of Engineering (Andhra University), Visakhapatnam
The Department of Marine Engineering under the College of Engineering started in the year 1971 keeping in view the growth of the shipping industry. The department offers both post graduate and under graduate courses. The undergraduate course, B.E. Naval Architecture & Marine Engineering, has 30 seats and the placement records boast the fact that many students have entered the private shipping industries and the Indian Navy as well.

The School of Maritime Studies, which comes under the Vels University, offers courses for the undergraduates like a three year course in B.Sc Nautical Science, four year course in B.E Marine Engineering and a HND (Higher National Diploma) Nautical Science and HND Marine Engineering course. In collaboration with City of Glasgow College, Scotland, UK, the School of Maritime Studies jointly conducts two courses – HND Courses in Nautical Science and Marine Engineering.
