The ability to wake up early seems to be that magical ability that only those annoying “always happy, super positive” people seem to have. No matter how hard you try, you just can’t seem to form this habit. You try to rationalize that you don’t need to wake up early, but from the experience of those few days on which you managed to do the impossible, you know that waking up early usually leads to a wonderful day. The truth is that waking up early is definitely one of the best habits to form. By giving you extra time to do things in the relative quite of the morning it helps in improving productivity and it’s also good for the health and overall happiness. One simple solution is to set up multiple alarms that are separated by a couple of minutes. Make it so irritating that it’s near to impossible to keep sleeping once the alarm clock starts going off in the morning. Another trick to force yourself to wake up early in the morning is to set the alarm in the other corner of the room so that you have to actually get out of the bed to turn it off. One nerdy solution to the problem is to programming the brain to automatically get out of bed as soon as the alarm goes off. To do this you need to practice it in the evening daily for a few weeks. Close the curtains of your room and turn off the lights and get in bed. Set the alarm to go off in a couple of minutes. Form a routine that you want to follow in the morning. It can be something like getting out of bed, stretching, turning off the alarm and then drinking some water while standing. As soon as the alarm goes off do the routine. By doing this over and over again you can program your brain to do the routine as soon as the alarm goes off on auto mode without you having to think about it.

The problem in waking up early is that your brain takes time to reboot and in that time you can fall back asleep. In order to increase the rebooting time you can try rapid deep breathing in the morning. When the alarm goes off, stay in bed but start taking rapid deep breaths. The overdose of oxygen works great to wake up the brain and speed up the circulation in the body.

A simple trick is to have a friend of yours who does wake up early, call you in the morning. Tell them to call and then talk to you in the morning so you are forced to wake up. The downside is that if your friend fails to wake up then you do too.

Our bodies like nothing better than routines. Forming a fairly strict routine about when you go to bed every night can help in waking up at a fixed time daily. Also form a night routine that you do before going to bed and a morning routine that you do after waking up. Another point about routines is that if you don’t have a routine it means that your body clock is out of sync. Many youngsters now have a body clock that is almost opposite to the natural one. One of the best ways to form the habit of waking up early in the morning is to do it in baby steps. The idea is to note what time you wake up daily. Then everyday take one baby step towards waking up early. If you wake up at 9 in the morning then start by setting the alarm for 08:55 the next day. It’s incredibly easy to wake up just 5 minutes before you usually wake up. In this way keep waking up 5 minutes earlier everyday. If you fail on some day take a step backwards and start again. Remember to take only baby steps for this system to work and don’t make big jumps in your enthusiasm.
