As we grow old our chances of developing a brain disorder increase. It’s a normal part of growing old as a lot of people develop one or the other type of brain disorder as the brain gets older and weaker. But sometimes these disorders can affect us at a young age as well. Either way there are telltale signs of a brain disorder rearing its ugly head that we can watch out for. Whether a person is old or young if they start showing a lot of the following signs they should be checked for mental illness.
10. Memory Loss:
Memory loss is a sign of brain disorder. It can also be caused by damage to the brain. Anytime a person loses memory temporarily or permanently it points directly to some sort of damage or disorder of the brain. Even young people can have blackouts where they don’t remember anything that they’ve been doing. It can be a sign of brain disorder.
9. Forgetting Names of People:
Many people are not good with remembering names of people and that is normal. But if someone finds it very difficult to remember anyone’s names or to associate faces with names then it can be a sign of brain disorder. It is like memory loss but not a complete one and rather selective memory loss.
8. Forgetting Common Words:
Another form of selective memory loss is when people forget commonly used words. Such people find it hard to communicate properly because they keep forgetting the common everyday use words that they need to communicate. It’s the feeling of knowing what you want to say but the exact word just eluding your mind.
Confusion can be a sign of mental illness if the person is extremely or unusually confused. Confusion is caused by lapses in memory and that can happen due to an injury or a brain disorder. Extreme confusion can happen suddenly or build up gradually with time. If someone is facing unexplainable confusion they should be checked for brain damage.
6. Inability to Solve Simple Problems:
One good test of brain disorder is to make the patient do simple problems such as simple algebra or analytical reasoning problems. If a person has problems solving such simple problems that a person of their intelligence should be able to solve then it is a clear sign of brain disorder or brain damage.
5. Misplacing Things:
As people grow old they start misplacing a lot of stuff. This is not uncommon but if someone becomes too forgetful about their belongings then it can be a sign of brain disorder. Mostly people will think they’ve lost something and later find it in a place where they had themselves kept the object but later forgot about it.
4. Changes in Mood or Personality:
If a person starts staying irritable or has a lot of mood swings it can be a sign of brain disorder. A change in personality that happens suddenly can also be caused by brain disorders. The change is not always bad and sometimes if a person suddenly becomes too altruistic or pleasant which is contrary to their normal nature it is still a sign of brain disorder.
3. Hampered to Visual Perception:
Visual perception and spatial understanding is controlled by the brain and if this ability is hampered it can be due to a brain disorder. Over sensitivity to light can also be caused by brain damage. If a person has problems judging the space around them then they should be checked for brain damage.
2. Social Withdrawal:
Withdrawal from social encounters can either be a direct or indirect sign of brain disorder. Sometimes if a person loses confidence because of the inability to remember names and words then they can try to stay away from social contact. In some brain disorders a person might become reclusive directly due to a condition of the brain.

Worrying too much, fearing a lot of things and feeling anxious all the time can be due to a brain disorder. It is seen in people as they grow older that they start to worry too much and stay afraid for their and other’s safety. They might also become paranoid about a fear that is completely unfounded. All these are signs of brain damage and disorder.
