I am not saying that these are my favorites but I am sure that the reality shows enlisted on this page of Topyaps represents all the generations and genres. Moreover, I would like to say that these shows have changed the face of primetime television by pulling away the nasty comedies and boring dramas.
10. The Hills:
An actual lifestyle of the bold and beautiful adults, this reality show was aired on MTV from May 31, 2006 to July 2, 2010. With 6 seasons and 102 episodes, The Hills follows the personal lives of charming adults residing in Los Angeles. Throughout the tenure, this television show acquired the public attention for its drop dead gorgeous crew, including Lauren Conrad and her beautiful friends, Whitney Port, Audrina Patridge and Heidi Montag.
9. Fear Factor:
Definitely, your lifestyle becomes more intense when you are surrounded by terror. Fragmented in 6 seasons and 142 episodes, Fear Factor is a reality show for the daredevils. Directed by J. Rupert Thompson, this show was adapted by the NBC for American market which was broadcasted from June 11, 2001 to September 12, 2006. However, Fear Factor became popular for its breathtaking stunts but it was also criticized for mistreating animals.
8. Project Runway:
Hosted by Heidi Klum, this reality show focuses on aspiring fashion designer seeking their way into the industry. After analyzing the designs of participants, each week one or more contestants are wiped out from the show. Started on December 1, 2004, this show was initially aired on the Bravo network but due to some legal complexities it was later switched on the Lifetime television.
7. Big Brother:
Derived from George Orwell’s novel Nineteen Eighty-Four, this reality show was first aired in 1999, on Veronica TV channel in the Netherlands. In this reality show, a group of people is lodged in a massive house which is isolated from the outside world. However, people are marooned but their activities are unceasingly watched by the security cameras. Currently, this world-wide sensation is being aired in more than 70 countries.
6. Wife Swap:
Whenever I listen about this reality show, the first thing that suddenly knocks my mind is WOW. Created by Stephen Lambert and televised on Channel 4, Wife Swap was started on January 1, 2003 and after creating a chain of legal issues, it was finally ended on December 19, 2009. In this reality show, two women are swapped for two weeks and imposes their own vision on parenting and housekeeping.
5. The Bachelor:
Broadcasted on ABC since 2002, this competitive reality show is hosted by Chris Harrison. The Bachelor revolves around an exciting and adventurous chronology of one man and 25 women with raw and real emotions. The bachelors dates with the women on exotic locations and finally, he selects the one after eliminating others and witnessing some unforgettable experiences.
4. The Amazing Race:
A reality show with the whole world as a set, this television phenomenon is created by Elise Doganieri and Bertram van Munster. It was started in 2001 in United States on CBS channel and since then it has grabbed eight Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Reality Competition Program. Based on the same format, various international versions of this reality shows has been launched by the date.
3. The Real World:
Groundbreaker show of 1990s, The Real World is the longest running program throughout the history of MTV which initiated the modern era of reality shows. First aired in 1992, this reality show focuses on the interpersonal relationships of strangers living together in a house for several months. From its very beginning, this show has grabbed the attention of mainstream of media for depicting the issues of young adulthood and substance abuse.
2. American Idol:
Conceptualized from the British show Pop Idol, American Idol is a talent hunt program created by Simon Fuller. Started on June 11, 2002, on Fox network, this reality show is considered as one of the most successful program in the history of American television. From the bunch of participants, this show discovers the best singer in the country selected by viewers choice.
Created in 1992 by Charlie Parson, this reality television game show format is now telecasted in various countries throughout the world. In this show, teams of contestants are are stranded in the wilderness where they have to perform their best in the field of teamwork, willpower, problem solving and endurance. This reality show is now managed by the Castaway Television Productions.
