Religion has always conceded many myths. It has been seen that religious views of a person in one part of the world directly confront that of other and highlight the myths associated with the religion further. Therefore, it doesn’t matter what religion you belong to, beliefs you inherit or perceptions you have, myths are bound to exist. Here is a list of top 10 myths about religion present in the world.
10. Religious people are conservative:
It is a general belief all around the world that religious people are conservative and would drag the world back to the Dark Ages. Had it been the truth, entire world would have been back in the dark era by now as most of the world population is religious. It is nothing more than rude and immature to attach this view with devout people.
9. Atheist and religion:
It is widely believed that atheists constitute a religion. They are believers in their own beliefs and principles. It is also believed that they have their own deity and Holy Scriptures. The entire assumption is based on baseless facts and lacks any reasoning. The main principle on which atheists’ ideal is based is that there is no God.
8. Freedom in religion:
Many people around the world feel that religion gives no freedom to its followers. They argue that any religion, howsoever popular it maybe, lacks flexibility and liberty. The followers have to live their life on the mercy of the religious leaders and have no viewpoint of their own. The truth is that the religion awakens you spiritually and enlightens you about the concept of liberty and inner self.
7. We are the best:
Religious supremacy is a subject of raging debates across the world. It is widely believed that Christianity is the best among all the religions – on the basis of its penetration, spread and reach. Followers of other religions have their own arguments. The thing that should be clear to all is that all religions preach a common thought of brotherhood and peace and the “best” concept does not apply here.
6. Religion and development:
Westerners generally relate religion to development of the country’s economy. To most of the people residing in the western world, their religion (Christianity) is the only reason for their self sustained and speedy development. It should be understood that economic development of the country depends on the hard work of its people and formation of accurate policies by its policymakers.
5. We are the oldest:
This myth is the foremost reason of religious wars around the world. Archaeological data can only provide the date of birth of the first civilization but it cannot prove the existence of any religion at that point of time. It is very difficult to produce exact dates and relate them to the birth of a particular religion. Therefore the battles that were and are fought in the name of religion are fruitless.
4. Agonists and atheists:
This is a debate which has been prevalent since the time immemorial. There is a myth that both atheists and agnoists are the same. One should understand that agonists do not believe in existence of God while atheists have no belief whatsoever in Him. The two words are used interchangeably by the users most of the time and spreads confusion.
3. Men score over women:
A myth is that men are better placed than women on issues like abiding religious beliefs. Though there is no such thing mentioned in any religious textbook, a patriarchal mindset of the medieval societies has led to the continuation of this anti-feminist myth. No Holy Book mentions any discrimination on the basis of gender. All are equal in His eyes.
2. A way to heaven:
Religious leaders have infused this myth in the mind of their followers that only if one supports the particular religious sect will he ensure his place in heaven. Most people follow the religion blindly and in the greed of space in heaven (utopian) commit many follies which are unrighteous in the eyes of humanity. A religious follower should be wise enough in practicing a religion free from any influence or greed.
It is believed that polygamy is an essential facet of some religions and that it is oppresses women. The truth is that faith has got nothing to do with oppression of women. Polygamy is not anti-women but can be called illegal in some countries based on their civil laws. Atrocities against women continue to happen in countries where a ‘broader’ religion is widely practiced while women enjoy immense freedom in countries where religion is believed to be too strict.
