Robots are a well known part of science fiction since a very long time. Ever since men could think of the idea of a robot, there have been robots created in the imagination of writers. The idea that a thinking robot could actually exist, live among humans and make logical decisions has always intrigued story writers and led them to explore the still unknown world of artificial intelligence. There are some amazing robot characters that we have often seen in fiction. With that in mind, let us look at our choices for the top 10 robot characters in fiction.
10. HAL 9000:
HAL 9000 or the Heuristically Programmed Algorithmic computer is a character from the movie, 2001 A Space Odyssey which is based on the book of the same name written by Arthur C. Clarke. It controlled the Discovery One craft and also interacted with the crew. HAL has been given the voice of a character that is calm, composed and conversational in nature.
9. The Iron Giant:
The Iron Giant is a young boy’s best friend. This robot which crash lands on the earth has lost some of its memory and has the young boy as his only friend. Its functional requirement is a regular supply of metal which the boy happily provides. The military however get apprehensive and aim to destroy the robot before it gets to do the same to them. This was a 1999 film.
8. Johnny 5:
Tim Blaney is the voice for this sentient robot known as Johnny 5. The name of this 1985 animated film is Short Circuit. The robot has come to be a much loved character among children and Sci-Fi lovers as the film has some amazing concepts put forward. Johnny 5 at the peak of his glory hit the markets with his own line of robot kits and there are some fan sites that have also come up for this beloved character.
Astroboy is a young and pure hearted robot who also has super strength and some amazing other powers. The boy robot embarks on a journey to find his human side and to seek out adventures. This 2009 movie is based in the futuristic Metro City where a scientist creates the robot boy with pure blue energy.
Small Wonder is one of the most loved American Sci-Fi TV series which premiered in 1989. Vicki is a robot girl created by a robotics engineer, she looks very much like a human girl and her identity is kept secret by her family. Vicki is a wonderful little robot who takes everything literally and has talks in a robotic voice. She sleeps in the closet and her charging point is below her armpit.
5. Optimus Prime:
Optimus Prime is a well known robot character from the TV series/movie series, the Transformers. Optimus is the leader of one of the factions of intelligent transforming robots who come from the planet known as Cybertron. He is a true leader and always puts the safety of his team and the human race before his own life. He is the true hero and the true leader of the Autobots who are constantly dealing with their evil robotic cousins, the Decepticons.
The police cop who had a fatal accident and was transfused into the body of a cyborg to become the ultimate enforcer is a very well known robot character from film. The first film of this Science Fiction series was released in 1987 and is based in the Detroit of the future. Officer Alex Murphy is no more as he is known to the world by the name of Robocop.
The Terminator series brings to life the science of the future. In the first movie of the series, The Terminator, a robot, travels back in time to kill off the future savior of the human race. This robot character played by Arnold Schwarzenegger is one of the most well known robot characters in films. The character was recreated in the subsequent sequels as the good guy instead of the bad, protecting the same child that he had come back to kill.
2. Lt. Cmdr. Data:
Lt Cmdr. Data is a fictional character in the Sci-Fi series Star Trek. Data is a robot android who serves as the second officer on the Starship Enterprise which is the ship that travels through space exploring new and unknown lands. Data is excellent with emotions as he has an emotional chip installed in him which allows him to explore his own humanity although he is far from human.

The eccentric pair of R2D2 and C3PO are a part of every Star Wars film. They are two of the most well known robot characters ever brought to life in film. The two follow the adventures of the Jedi and the other protagonists in the series and are the only robots that appear in all of the Star Wars films. Their misadventures lead them to the farthest corners of space as they accompany their masters through thick and thin.
