Diet related illnesses and diseases have been on the rise in recent years. Obesity is a major killer in itself. All this has been a result of the changes in our diet. We no longer eat fresh whole foods that are grown locally. Instead we eat highly processed foods that are packaged and advertised nicely. Refined and processed foods contain a lot of preservatives and additional ingredients that are not good for us and many have even been linked directly to some forms of cancer. The problem is that we have become so accustomed to harmful foods that we don’t even realize how bad they can be.
People have started realizing that white bread is not that good for the body and they now eat brown bread or whole wheat bread. But what you don’t know is that there are no breads that are good for you. Breads don’t contain much nutritional value and are only full of calories in the form of carbohydrates. They also contain a lot of salt and sugar and other chemicals added to soften them up. Most commercially baked breads are unhealthy.
9. Breakfast Cereal:
Breakfast cereal has really become popular as a “healthy” alternative for breakfast. But it is not as healthy as you think. Once again since it is highly processed, that means a lot of chemicals have been added to it. Vitamins and other nutrients might be added additionally to the cereal but mostly it contains just carbohydrates and lots of sugar.
8. Microwave Popcorn:
Microwave popcorn comes in plastic bags that are lined with a compound known as PFOA. When you microwave the popcorns, this compound leeches into them. It has been known to be a “likely carcinogen” and can cause reproductive and development problems in humans. The butter flavored popcorn you eat at the movies doesn’t contain real butter but an artificial flavoring compound that is not good for you.
7. Ice Cream:
Traditionally ice cream doesn’t need anything more than milk and sugar but most of the ice cream available from big multinational outlets contains a whole lot of chemicals and preservatives added to it. They also add a lot more sugar than is good for you. If you must eat ice cream opt for local small stores that make home made ice creams.
6. Diet Soda:
When everybody started talking about soda being bad for health and a main cause of obesity, soda manufacturers came up with diet soda. Not only does diet soda taste rubbish but it might be even more harmful for you body. It might be zero calorie but the artificial sweeteners and coloring they add to it makes it a very unhealthy drink.
5. Fat Free Chips:
Just like diet soda, fat free chips were the solution provided by Procter & Gamble to the regular fattening chips. They used a substance called Olestra or Olean instead of cooking oil to make these chips. It might lower the calories but it also lowers your body’s ability to absorb vitamins and causes anal leakage.
4. Processed Meat:
Processed meats in the form of bacon, sausage, hot dogs etc. contain preservatives and chemicals that are added to make the meat appear fresh for a long time. Chicken used in so many popular fast food chains actually contains arsenic, a poison, added to make it appear pink and fresh. Most of your meat comes from meat factories that use genetically modified feed and growth hormone injections.
3. Refined Anything:
Refined sugar and refined flour are both very bad for health. Anything that is refined means that it has been processed for a long time. It loses most of its nutrients in the process and a lot of preservatives are added to make it last longer. Canned foods too are no way near as healthy as fresh ingredients. The best idea is to stay away from refined food.
2. Non-Organic Produce:
But if you are going to go for fresh produce then make sure you use organically grown vegetables and fruits. Non organic food contains a lot of pesticides and insecticides that are very harmful for the body. The insects and pests that ruin crops keep getting stronger and every time the farmers turn to stronger poisons to keep their crops safe. But this arms race with the pests has led to the food now becoming very unhealthy for humans to use.
1. Fruit Juice:
Fruit juice is considered a better option than soda but it might be just as harmful. Most fruit juice products contain very less fruit and are mostly water, sugar and artificial flavoring. There is nothing better than eating a fresh organic whole fruit and if you want to drink juice make it yourself out of fresh fruits. Don’t go for the commercially produced ones.
