Among the many things British left behind, Cricket and Cinema have become more ingrained in our culture than any other. Ever since Indian cinema industry started in 1913 with its first movie Raja Harishchandra, it has continued to churn out hundreds of movies every year in past 100 years. The Hindi film industry, also called Bollywood, alone has an interesting mix of classics and commercial potboilers in every genre with some of them not bound to the shackles of time. 10. 3 Idiots

The movie directed in 2009 by Raj Kumar Hirani is one of the highest grossing movies in Bollywood. This comic film was successful in hurtling near-perfect social cannon balls on a society that had lost the idea of education. Based on the novel ‘Five Point Someone’ by Chetan Bhagat, the movie relates and challenges the present education system in India. The story revolves around three friends who emphasize on knowledge being more important than marks. It is something out of the quotidian movie and has won many accolades.

9. Hum Aapke Hain Koun..!

A remake of Nadiya Ke Paar, Hum Apke Hain Koun..1 is a 1994 Indian musical romantic comedy family drama. It is a classic with that indefinable love story of Prem (played by Salman Khan) and Nisha (played by Madhuri Dixit). It left the audiences mesmerized with their heart-warming forfeited love which was developed slowly. A true Hindi drama in every sense and a genuineness of love and care for each other with the affiliation of enticing music is something that anyone can fall in love with.

8. Devdas

Based on the Bengali novel by Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay, this Sanjay Leela Bhansali film presented the connection between three central figures – Devdas (Shahrukh Khan), Parvati (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan) and Chandramukhi (Madhuri Dixit) – in a poignant way. Bhansali has tweaked some portions of the original story but the presentation is grand. The mellifluous music by Ismail Darbar adds to that grandiosity.

7. Lagaan

Lagaan is a musical epic drama film by Ashutosh Gowariker that set high standards in all aspects of filmmaking. No one could have thought that a simple cricket game would go on to make cinematic history. Cricket is the most thrilling part of the movie which keeps the audiences engaged, but it is the breathtaking performances that leave a lasting impact. It is a story of a man who unites a group of rag-tag and heavily indebted farmers for a cricket match against the British Raj putting the debt (lagaan) at stake.

6. Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge

DDLJ is a romantic film by late director Yash Chopra. Released in 1995, it shattered all records at the Box Office. A simple love story of a boy and girl, who meet each other on a European vacation, blended with the melodious and everlasting music of Jatin-Lalit makes it a cinema of all times. It won 10 awards in a row at the 1996 Filmfare Awards. It has the unique distinction of being the longest-running movie in Indian cinematic history.

5. Deewar

Another hit directorial by Yash Chopra in 1975, Deewar can also be called as one of the most successful movies of Amitabh Bachchan. All the characters in the film entered into cinematic history overnight. The dialogues from the film are still fresh in the minds of the people from that era and often retold by the present generation. It is a story of two penurious brothers and their mother who brave all societal odds. It is a reflection of a vociferous politics in the early 1970’s.


4. Guide

Released in 1965 and directed by Vijay Anand, Guide is one of the best films of Dev Anand. It was critically acclaimed movie based on the novel ‘The Guide’ by R.K. Narayan. A magnum opus of the Indian film industry combined with an exceptionally noteworthy music, Guide is listed in the Time magazine at number 5 on its Best Bollywood Classics. It was also screened at the Cannes film festival in 2007 – 42 years after its release. A 120 minute US version is also available with additional scenes. The euphonious music is loved by millions till date.

3. Mother India

Another Bollywood masterpiece in 1957, Mother India was directed by Mehboob Khan. Very few know that it is a remake of Mehboob Khan’s 1940 movie, Aurat. It is a story of an idealistic, self-sacrificing Indian woman who kills her son because he became a criminal. It was done to set a moral example for the welfare of the society. It was shortlisted for the Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language film in 1958. The social message of the movie remains significant till date.

2. Mughal-e-Azam

One of the distinctly admirable and splendid hindi movies of Indian Cinema was directed by K. Asif in 1960. It was made under the banner of Sterling Investment Corporation and is a milestone in Bollywood history. It is the epic story of Mughal Prince Salim who falls in love with a court dancer, Anarkali, to his father Akbar’s disapproval instigating a war between them. The film’s music is a fine blend of Indian classical and contemporary tunes. Apart from all the interruptions and pauses it faced, Mughal-e-Azam turned out to be a most expensive Indian film of that time.


1. Sholay

Sholay is bound to receive the top position because it appeals to a much larger audience till date. It was directed by Ramesh Sippy in 1975, and the most important ingredient of this typical masala movie is its screenplay by Salim-Javed. Sholay is still considered amongst the greatest films in Indian cinema with perfect combination of music, story, dialogues, direction, acting and action – essential ingredients for a commercial movie. The story, the amazing performances by even the minor characters and the dialogues made the movie a classic in Bollywood history. It also topped the ‘British Film Institute’ poll of top 10 Hindi Films.
