Resolutions, my friends, are exactly that- a revamped start to the age old habits. Be it the New Year’s eve or just an ordinary day full of self realization; we tend to make promises to ourselves which for reasons known and at times unknown take us through the same trodden path all over again. How many times have you tried to quit smoking? Or, how often have you promised yourself of adhering to a healthy diet? Far too many to even remember isn’t it? Well you are not the only one; we are all the same; like peas in a pod as they say! But what are those habits that seem so reluctant to leave us; habits that stay with us and manage to be glued to our lives inspite of all the resolutions. They say “a resolution to avoid an evil is seldom framed till the evil is so far advanced as to make avoidance impossible”. Let us find out what are those top ten resolutions that get broken every other day and every other time one makes them!
10. Not falling in Love again:
Yes that’s true; it is the ever so common resolution that is made just to be broken. So often we have fallen in and out of love promising ourselves to never again tread the same path. The saying ‘Once Bitten Twice Shy’ somehow finds absolutely no relevance in these matters and we find ourselves being lured towards the very same trap time and again. Yes, this again is a resolution akin to castles in air which fail to arrive at the soothing earth of reality.

9. Holiday at least once a year:
When was the last time you went on a holiday to get away from this chaotic life? Can’t remember? Well we all wish for a vacation; some time off from our monotonous lives but how many are actually able to make time for one such escapade? Holidays end up being deferred either due to work pressures or some or the other important need that takes precedence over everything else. How often have you heard yourself say that; one we move into our own apartment or once we complete the EMIs for the car; we’ll go on a trip of a lifetime. Countless I am sure? They say all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy and we spend year after year delaying a few days off; always putting off some quality ‘Me Time’ for the never ending ‘Work Time’. We fail to realize that at no point of time will we be free from responsibilities; to grant us the luxury of travel for leisure. So yes, gifting ourselves that one holiday each year is the promise that we break habitually.

8. Say no to Drinks:
What was the longest time that you have spent without sipping into your favourite drink? Drinking is a habit that starts as a casual and one of time indulgence but soon becomes a habit; a hard one to get rid of at that. We see men with beer bellies and girls with sagging double chins; more often than not it is the allure of beer and such drinks that lead you and your body on that path and sometimes even to greater damage. People try and give up drinking or reduce it at the least; many succeed but equally huge is the number of people who wash down the resolution with a scotch on the rocks!

7. Exercising and getting fit:
Most of us have a sedentary lifestyle with hardly any physical activity to be done during the day. Sitting for hours infront of the laptop or computer; we end up being very low on stamina and fitness. Heart diseases, cholesterol and many such ailments are a direct result of this very way of life of ours. Yes we do understand the odds and make a mental note of going to the gym in office after work; or the gym of the neighborhood. But does that happen? We give preference to sleep or even resting simply on our couches over making an effort to have an active and healthy lifestyle. Yes, this is the resolution which fails so miserably every other day with us and with those around us; yes we opt for the couch potato approach to life over anything remotely healthy.

6. More Time with Family:
Home to Office and back with just enough time for dinner. Yes that is the life most of us lead these days. When was the last time we spent an evening with our families over dinner instead of rushing through it as a means to finally be off to sleep? It must have been ages I am sure; with the ever increasing cost of living we are being forced to spend more and more time in offices and the ever increasing traffic adds further insult to this injury. Life has become too mechanical to even compare. Hence, we often find ourselves making pledges to find that hour to spend with our parents or spouse or children. But the pressures of modern day’s hectic lifestyle make this just another addition to the list of shattered resolutions.

5. No more shopping:
Shopping and girls are like a pair made in heaven; the need and urge to shop is hardwired into us girls. We are inadvertently shopaholics; given a chance we would end up buying the entire neighborhood mall or boutique. Yes that’s the extent to which we are obsessed with it. Sitting in the office we browse the online portals for the best brands in market; wandering in the malls for window shopping almost always leads us to the billing counters. So yes we shop at every opportunity and justify ourselves by promising to this being our last purchase or splurge. But as the sun never fails to rise from the east each morning; we too go back to our own indulging and spending ways etching the path for more such broken promises and resolutions.

4. Give up Junk Food! Eat Healthy:
We all love McDonald’s, KFC, and Dominos and more; we are the quintessential junk food generation. Be it birthdays, anniversaries or simple get-togethers or even just an ordinary meal; we see ourselves being draw to these outlets. Such is the love for junk food that we hardly stop and question ourselves about the side effects of gorging on that big fat cheese burger or that ever so fattening cheese burst pizza. However, when we stop fitting into that favourite jeans of ours we promise ourselves to shun off even the slightest quantity of fat from our diets. But to our dismay the very next day we again find ourselves in a mall relishing the same burger; choosing a bigger waistline over a healthier diet. So yes this too is one of the frequently broken resolutions.

3. Saving for the future:
We all want a comfortable life in the imminent future and for that it is imperative that we save a portion of our earnings. But often we see the allure of the present cloaks our judgment and we end up with close to nothing in the savings account. Suddenly in a moment of truth; we vow ourselves to buckle up and stash away a fraction of our income from the next pay day onwards. But again as is with most of the resolutions this one too very seldom manages to see the light of day.

2. Study seriously from the next Semester:
This isn’t just a joke doing the rounds on every social networking site. It is the fact! Haven’t we all promised ourselves throughout our academic lives to study sincerely from day one of the following semester? But as all the infamous resolutions; this too has been broken by us at every opportunity provided. The sheer need of procrastination of studies to attend to other assumingly important things like the latest movies or the happening parties; causes this resolution to more often than not go kaput.

1. Quit Smoking:
Smoking as every packet of cigarette rightly says is injurious to health but somehow the warning has been overlooked for ages by the lovers of fag. Be it defiance; peer pressure or rebellion which causes one to take up this habit; the fact is it is harder to quit then start. Hence, this habit which you might take up ends up being tied to you forever. It is one of the most common resolutions we end up making and breaking time after time.
