Breast cancer is a big killer for women all over the world. Although breast cancer can occur in men, it is a 100 times more common in women. The survival rate for breast cancer in developed countries is pretty good but this is not the case in the third world countries. Like all diseases, breast cancer too doesn’t differentiate between a normal person and a celebrity. But when celebs get breast cancer they have an opportunity to set a wonderful example for rest of the women in the world by fighting it bravely. The following celebrities have done just that.
Christina Applegate is a Hollywood movie and television star. In 2008 at the age of 36 she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Her mother has also suffered from breast cancer twice and survived both times. Since she too had a higher risk of the cancer returning back, she chose to have both her breasts removed in a mastectomy. She started a charity called Right Action for Women that provides financial aid to women who have a high risk of breast cancer.
Sex and the City star, Cynthia Nixon was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 40 in 2006. She tried to keep her diagnosis a secret because she didn’t want the paparazzi to bother her or her family members. She went through treatment and was encouraged by her mother, who is also a breast cancer survivor, to tell her story so as to inspire other women.
Barbara Mori, the Uruguayan-Mexican model and actress was diagnosed with breast cancer at a very young age of 29 in 2007. Because of her early detection she was able to beat the disease and cured it completely. She has been working on cancer awareness since then and participated in a documentary titled, “1-a-minute” that is about breast cancer.
Sheryl Crow was lucky to have detected her cancer very early on. In 2006 at the age of 44 this singer songwriter detected suspicious calcifications in both her breasts and went for a mammogram to confirm breast cancer. She went through surgery. She supplemented her treatment with acupuncture and herbal teas. Because of her early detection she didn’t have to go through chemotherapy.
Angelina Jolie became a source of inspiration to thousands of women when in 2013 at the age of 37 she went through a double mastectomy as a preventive measure to avoid getting breast cancer. Her mother had died of breast cancer and when she got herself checked her doctors told her that she had an 87% chance of getting breast cancer. This was a very brave and inspiring move that will inspire all the women who suffer from breast cancer.
Edie Falco is an American actress that is well known for playing Carmela Soprano in hit television drama Sopranos. In 2003 she was diagnosed with breast cancer but chose to keep it a secret. The 40 year old star didn’t want anyone’s pity and didn’t even tell the crew of Sopranos. She went through the treatment and beat the disease in 2004.
Robin Roberts is the anchor of the famous American news television show, Good Morning America. In 2007 she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She was 46 at that time and announced to the world that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer. She had a lumpectomy and went through 8 chemotherapy treatments and radiation treatments.
Jaclyn Smith is most famous for being one of the Charlie’s Angels in the 70’s sitcom. She now is a successful entrepreneur and television personality. At the age of 56 in 2002 she found a lump in her breast during a routine exam. She went through a lumpectomy and radiation and managed to defeat the cancer.
Melissa Etheridge is a rock vocalist who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2004 at the age of 43. She had lost a lot of her family members to cancer and found her own experience to be a spiritual revelation. She wrote a song about her struggle called, I Run for Life. She famously performed bald in the 2005 Grammys just after she had gone through a rigorous chemotherapy and radiation session.
