On the one hand there is the Indian Gangster Trilogy and on the other, the Gangs of Wasseypur. So, yes, Bollywood is indeed adept in handling blood, crime and gore with vigour and expertise.

10. Satya (1998):

Satya was released in the year 1998 and stars J.D. Chakravarthy, Manoj Bajpai, Urmila Matondkar and Shefali Shah. The screenplay was written by none other than Anurag Kashyap and Saurabh Shukla, and it was directed by Ram Gopal Varma. The film deals with the story of a man who arrives in Mumbai in search of work but gets drawn into the Underworld. If not anything else, then one must watch the movie for Manoj Bajpai’s performance as Bhiku Mhatre.

9. Vaastav (1999):

This was one of the best crime movies ever written in Indian cinema. Vaastav was both written and directed by Mahesh Manjrekar and stars Sanjay Dutt as the protagonist. The film is believed to have drawn inspiration from the life of Mumbai underworld gangster Chota Rajan. It is a cult film which depicts the unforgiving realities of the Mumbai Underworld.

8. Shootout at Lokhandwala (2007):

It is a 2007 film, directed by Apoorva Lakhia, based on the true story of how gangsters were shot down in a gun battle with the Mumbai Police in 1991 at the Lokhandwala Complex in the city. The film boasts of some brilliant acting and crisp portrayal of the shootout.

7. Sarkar (2005):

Set in the world of politics and crime, Sarkar is a politico-crime thriller directed by Ram Gopal Varma. The film has Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan, Kay Kay Menon, Katrina Kaif, Anupam Kher, Supriya Pathak and Tanisha Mukherjee in pivotal roles. It was a vivid adaptation of The Godfather with a political twist.

6. Omkara (2006):

Omkara was Vishal’s Bhardwaj’s adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Othello. The film starring Ajay Devgan, Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor in major roles also had ample support from Vivek Oberoi, Naseeruddin Shah and Konkona Sen Sharma. The film was a critical success and went on to win three National Film Awards.

5. Maqbool (2004):

It was a brilliant adaptation of Shakespeare’s Macbeth. Directed by Vishal Bhardwaj, an ensemble cast of intense and superb actors comprising of Pankaj Kapoor, Irfan Khan, Tabu and Masumeh Makhija is also one of the reasons behind the critical success of this film. Pankaj Kapoor was awarded the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of a powerful underworld don. It was a perfect blend of dark and satirical nuances; definitely worth a watch for the crime genre aficionados.

4. Shool (1999):

Shool was released in 1999 and was written by Ram Gopal Varma. Directed by E. Nivas, the subject of the plot is the unfortunate politician-criminal nexus and the interdiction of politics in the state of Bihar. With Manoj Bajpai as the protagonist, this is an excellent criminal drama with shades of dirty politics that makes the life of an honest police officer a living hell. The movie is definitely one of the best crime movies to have graced the Indian silver screen and deservedly won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi.

3. Company (2002):

It was a movie about the Mumbai Underworld starring Ajay Devgn, Mohanlal, Manisha Koirala, Seema Biswas. The film marked the debut of Vivek Oberoi in Bollywood. The movie boasts of immaculate depiction of a don who aims at tightening the leash of the underworld and of a rising youngster in the same criminal world aspiring to make it big. The film is speculated to have been based on the D-Company split between Mumbai crime lords Dawood Ibrahim and Chotta Rajan. All in all it is a very good gangster flick.

2. Gangs of Wasseypur I (2012):

Produced and directed by Anurag Kashyap this first of the two-part series released in 2012 was lauded by critics and fans alike. The entire film was shot at one go but due to the extended time of 318 minutes of the complete print, it was eventually divided into two movies. With the central plot of three feuding families, the story moves from 1940s to mid-1990s. It takes inspiration from the real mafia families of Wasseypur in Dhanbad, Jharkhand. No holds bar abuse, ferocity, carnage and bloodshed make this an out and out crime feature; and definitely one of the best crime movies of Bollywood.

1. Gangs of Wasseypur II (2012):

This is the second installment of the Gangs of Wasseypur saga, and is all about the conflicts among three influential crime families. Politics, crime and revenge rule the roost in this segment, too. Produced and directed by Anurag Kashyap, the cast includes Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Richa Chadda, Tigmanshu Dhulia, Pankaj Tripathi, Raj Kumar Yadav, Huma Qureshi and Zeishan Quadri. The story of this part spans over two decades, 1990s to 2009. Violence, blood and gore are unleashed in full throttle in this epic crime drama.
