Thugs Of Hindostan, which hits the big screen today, is one of the most-awaited films of 2018. What makes this big-ticket spectacle highly awaited by cinephiles is the fact that it brings the two most powerful actors of Hindi cinema – Amitabh Bachchan and Aamir Khan – together for the very first time. So without wasting any time, let’s us find out whether or not Thugs Of Hindostan is worth your money, time and efforts.
What’s The Film All About?
The film has a period setting. Ruled by Mirzasaab (Ronit Roy), Raunakpur used to be one of the few remaining kingdoms that had yet not accepted the rule of the British East India Company. However, using his whole bag of tricks, the Company representative, John Clive (Lloyd Owen) forced Mirzasaab to hand over his empire to the British and then murdered him, his wife and the prince. The only surviving member of the royal family was the Princess Safira, who is rescued by the slain king’s trusted aid Khudabaksh (Amitabh Bachchan).
Eleven years later, Safia is grown up and wants to avenge the brutal killing of her family. She wants her kingdom back from the clutches of the British. Helping her in her mission is Khudabaksh and his army that eats and breathes nothing but azaadi (independence). Clive wants to finish Khudabaksh’s army, but he has no idea of their whereabouts. To do the job, he hires a thug Firangi Mallah (Aamir Khan). Firangi can cheat and double-cross anyone under the sun if it benefits him. He has hoodwinked his childhood friend for petty pennies.
Soon, he joins Khudabaksh’s army and helps the East India Company in suppressing them. Will Firangi ever have a change of heart and regret his decisions? Will he put his own countrymen in danger to show his loyalty to the British. To know more about what transpires next, watch the film.
Does The Film Loot Your Heart?
There are hundreds of reasons why film buffs were waiting for this movie with bated breath. As I mentioned earlier, it stars Amitabh Bachchan and Aamir Khan together for the first time ever. Besides that, it is a Yash Raj Films’ offering made on a massive budget. Ever since the project was announced officially, we knew the makers were trying to cash in on the unmeasurable popularity of the two stars. Surprisingly, they succeed in doing what they had probably thought of. Big B and Mr. Perfectionist are so amazing in the film that the rest of the cast almost seems wasted as the two actors arrest the audience’s complete attention.
It is quite surprising that how at this age Amitabh Bachchan manages to do so much. He has given his hundred percent to each and every scene. Despite his age, he does not look weary and tired even in the most difficult scenes in the film. Perhaps that is what makes him the superstar of the millenium.
Aamir, on the other hand, is again in a terrific form. Though his character is not written as smartly as it should have been, he manages to take it to another level with his unrivalled talent. Fatima Sana Shaikh gets more screen time than what we had thought. She has some crucial scenes to prove her mettle and she does it quite honestly. But Katrina Kaif as Suraiya is totally disappointing. Besides looking gorgeous, she does not add much to the narrative.
After the film ends, you wonder ki bechari ko film mein liya hi kyon tha? Apart from two item numbers and a few not-so-important scenes, Kaif film se poori tarah gayab hain.
Talking about the story, Vijay Krishna Acharya seems unclear about what he wants Thugs Of Hindostan to accomplish, so he tries a little bit of everything. In a bid to make a larger-than-life film, he ends up delivering a not-so-refined product.
His story lacks the thrill that should have been the main staple of his film. There are scenes which seem forcefully added. With a runtime of almost three hours, the movie is way too long. The second half is stretched beyond point and could have been trimmed better. The cinematography of the movie is good. Music is average.
In spite of a long list of flaws, Thugs Of Hindostan is an addictive film, thanks to spectacular performance by Amitabh Bachchan and Aamir Khan. We have never seen the two actors before on celluloid, so missing this great opportunity won’t make any sense.
