This year we have read several stories of college students killing and torturing animals in the country. To add fuel to the fire, Kerala, which calls itself God’s Own Country, started to ruthlessly kill one of God’s best creatures — dogs.
However, one engineering college by the name of KG Reddy College of Engineering and Technology, Moinabad has flung its gates open to welcome animals.
Recognizing the value of teaching more than academics, this college has taken in dogs, birds, rabbits, ducks, turkeys and cats within its campus.
The Chairman of the college said:
The thought was that the students can bring in a change in the society and be the ambassadors in spreading the message to their family and friends about loving animals and being sensitive towards them. Based on the motto of ‘feel good and do good’, we want all our students to be involved in the activity of engaging with the animals brought to the shelters.
The initiative was taken earlier this year and so far 50 animals have been taken in.
The students are also taught responsibility apart from compassion as they take turns to feed and vaccinate the animals.
The students and the staff have fallen in love with the “peers” so much that once certified fit by the vet, the animals are also put up for responsible adoption.
Guess this kind of moral and compassionate teaching must be integrated within the syllabus across all educational institutions in the country.
