I remember gasping in surprise when the first look of Anupam Kher for the movie The Accidental Prime Minister was released. His makeup and demeanor were skillful enough to make the audience believe that they were seeing former PM Dr Manmohan Singh on the screen. Recently, the trailer of the movie was released and it created a controversy. The Accidental Prime Minister is set to release on January 11, 2019.
The upcoming year is very important for India. Why? Well, in 2019 India will have its general elections. The current ruling party had a majority win in the 2014 general elections. However, after the results of the recent assembly elections that seems like a slim possibility. Before building a bridge between this upcoming movie and the elections, let us present you the trailer.
Keeping aside the glimpse of a brilliant performance by Anupam Kher, there are two things that popped into my mind while watching the trailer. The timing of the movie is impeccable. With the election just around the corner, this movie clearly is a reminder about the opposition party who has collected the name for being a family that proved to be harmful for the nation. The other thing that I couldn’t help but observe is the dialogues that try to establish the fact that Dr Manmohan Singh was overshadowed to push forward Rahul Gandhi as India’s PM.
Written by ex PM’s media advisor Sanjaya Baru, the movie is based on a book by the same name. Though the book tells the inside story about the Gandhi family and Dr Manmohan Singh, the representation in the movie seems too direct.
Anupam Kher in the lead role is undoubtedly amazing but it is a known fact that he is someone who is close to the present ruling party. Not to forget, his wife Kirron Kher is an MP from Punjab for BJP. Isn’t the choice for the actor tad bit too obvious?
The actor, however, had a reply ready for it. In an interview, he said that he refused the role initially. However, the slow walk and monotonous voice of this famous personality challenged him to take up this role.
These are not just mere thoughts crowding my head but this recent tweet from BJP’s official handle proves the same:
Riveting tale of how a family held the country to ransom for 10 long years. Was Dr Singh just a regent who was holding on to the PM’s chair till the time heir was ready? Naturally, netizens were quick to point out the fact that even propaganda should have certain kind of subtle wrap. These are some of the comments:
The #AccidentalPrimeMinister & #Thackeray trailers are both superb but unfortunately you cannot trust on the facts and stories being told there. I think @Netflix is the hero of propaganda-less storytelling.

Who is this genius who thought sharing this trailer a good idea? I mean how idiotic! Lame. Counter productive.
Talk about digging one’s own grave!

It looks BJP has sponsored the movie….

Looks like you have sponsored the movie…
— Sandeep Deshpande (@SandeepD1965) December 27, 2018
How pitiable is BJP? Since Modi did zilch in past 4.5 years, to compensate for his lack you sponsored a film about a much more dignfied PM India had in Manmohan Singh. You can’t match his intellect, at least try matching his sense of propriety morons. Shameless saffron Toadies.

Movie’s official sponsor is BJP?
