Even as BJP sweeps through Assembly Polls and has now got government in almost all the states across India, Congress is passing through its worst phase since Independence.
With the Congress being reduced to just 44 seats in the 2014 General Elections, the national party needs to take some drastic step in 2019 elections, so as to survive as a major national party.
But even as INC tries to figure out how, a citizen from Thiruvananthapuram has started an online petition and made public’s view a little more clear for the party heads.
The petition, which has been started by a man called Paul Trivandrum, is seeking 10,000 signatures with the demand that the UPA nominates Shashi Tharoor to be their Prime Ministerial candidate in 2019 General Elections.
The petition, which has now got over 8,400 supporters, points out towards Tharoor’s many qualifications including the fact that he has “deep knowledge of international and national issues,” and that he” can connect with the people of India and with world leaders”.
The petition demands to nominate Tharoor to be the Prime Ministerial candidate in the “best interest of the World’s Largest Democracy” and also to “rejuvenate the opposition.”
The petition has over the days got huge backing with many agreeing with Paul’s view and asking for a change in the “best interest” of the country.
Tharoor is known as one of the most vocal Congress leaders and has a huge popularity among Indians.
He was India’s most followed politician on Twitter until 2013 when he was overtaken by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
But despite being overtaken by PM Modi, he still has 4.96 million followers on the micro-blogging site, which is much higher than Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi who has 1.78 million followers.
