Union minister Nitin Gadkari says that he has held talks with Tesla and SpaceX founder Elon Musk in which he has urged the futuristic entrepreneur to explore opportunities for Hyperloop in India.
Gadkari, the Minister of Road Transport, Highways, and Shipping, said that he held meetings with Musk and other senior officials of Tesla in the US and in New Delhi.
He said that he has invited Tesla to conduct Hyperloop test runs between Mumbai and Pune on an experimental basis.
The Hyperloop is a futuristic urban transport system which would enable commutation at almost supersonic speeds.
A bus-like capsule runs inside an over-the-ground tube. The low pressure inside the tube will make it possible for the capsule to travel at speed of over 1,100 km per hour between two points.
Gadkari says that if the Hyperloop comes to India, it would reduce the travel time on the 812 km Mumbai-Nagpur route to almost 35 minutes from around 13 hours it takes now.
The minister said that Tesla has been offered free land for a manufacturing facility in India.
