BCCI has asked aspirants to apply for the position of Team India’s coach. There are rumors that BCCI will not be giving any extension to Anil Kumble because of the rift between Kumble and Virat Kohli.
Anil Kumble’s term will be coming to an end after Champions Trophy and Indian cricket team’s chief coach’s post will be vacant. The nawab of Najafgarh, Virender Sehwag has become the most notable applicant for the post.
Sehwag does not have any prior experience of coaching except mentoring IPL franchise Kings XI Punjab, still, it’s BCCI top brass that convinced him to apply for the post.
The situation is similar to the last year’s when Ravi Shastri was all set to take the position and Anil Kumble was asked to apply for the post in the last minute. While Kumble has an automatic entry in this process, here are few others who have applied for the post.
1. Tom Moody
A soft-spoken man with a pleasing personality is being said to be a prototype of John Wright and Gary Kirsten, two of the successful coaches of India. 52-year-old Moody was an important member of Australia’s limited overs side till the late 90’s, representing the country in 76 ODIs.
It is being believed that BCCI may consider Moody, a proven international and IPL coach (Sri Lanka and Sunrisers Hyderabad) for the job.
2. Richard Pybus
Englishman Pybus has also coached Pakistan twice but has played only one first-class match. However, Richard is rated highly as a strategist.
3. Former fast bowler Dodda Ganesh and former India A coach Lalchand Rajput have also applied for the post. Moody and Lalchand Rajput were also the applicants last year, but it was Anil Kumble who got the post.
Many in BCCI believe that Sehwag is also a social media sensation and he can demand a whopping amount as his salary for the post. Who do you think is the best person for the post? Do share your opinion in the comments section below!
