A government school teacher in Shajapur, Madhya Pradesh, allegedly committed suicide because of police harassment.
In his suicide note addressed to Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, assistant teacher Manoj Kumar Purohit wrote that he was harassed and humiliated by the police.
He wrote that the case filed against him was false.
Purohit was arrested on October 29, the night before Diwali, under the Gambling Act 1867. He was one of the six charged under the act.
According to Dainik Bhaskar, all the accused alleged police brutality.
Purohit wrote that he was forced to remove his clothes, lick shoes and was beaten brutally.
The police, on the other hand, claims that the accused had in their possession around 35 thousand rupees, which was seized.
Purohit’s family claims that he lost his mental balance following the police brutality and he consumed poison. They have demanded that the government file a case against the accused.
He is survived by his wife, Ruby, and two children.
