Noted for his dignified take on contemporary issues, Swaraj Kaushal quoted Meena Kumari in one of his tweets to present the repercussion the custom had on the women. The quoted line was spoken by the legendary actress in front of her husband Kamaal Amrohi after being given triple talaq:

Talaaq to de rahe ho nazar-e-kehar ke saath, Jawani bhi meri lauta do mehar ke saath.

Needless to say, Kaushal’s quote went viral on the social media platform within minutes, with most of the people agreeing to what he wanted to convey through his tweet:

However, there were some people who were not in favor of what Kaushal had tweeted with one of them even lashing out at the ex-governor for the same:

Please check the fast before opening ur mouth like a garbage bin. Both were Shia Muslim and they don’t believe in triple talak. Nonsense.

Replying in a dignified manner, Swaraj advised the person to watch the well-made documentary on Meena Kumari:

Raza Sahib – Here is a well-researched documentary on Meena Kumari. You should like this.

Among other politicians to have welcomed this decision with open arms was Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister, Shivraj Singh Chouhan. Hailing the decision as an important step towards women’s liberation in India, the minister said:

We welcome the Supreme Court verdict on triple talaq and urge the central government to enact a law soon. Traditions like Triple Talaq are like mental and social harassment of our sisters and daughters and are an impediment in the progress of modern Indian society.

Not just leaders of the ruling party, politicians from opposition parties, like Congress’ Salman Khurshid, also welcomed this decision saying, “It is a good decision”.
