The Congress has demanded Sushma Swaraj’s resignation for assistance given to Lalit Modi in procuring travel documents from the British government.
On Wednesday Congress party members stalled the discussion of the Constitution Amendment Bill for the GST in the Rajya Sabha. The House had to be adjourned for the day at 2:45 PM. Meanwhile, Rahul Gandhi has stated that Parliament will only be allowed to function if Swaraj and Vasundhara Raje are removed by Narendra Modi for their involvement in what is being called the LaMo issue in the media.
Doing what the BJP is best known for, instead of answering the tough questions, Swaraj immediately dug into the not-so-savory past of the Congress party.
Swaraj lashed out at Rahul Gandhi, asking him to reflect on his family’s history “during one of his long holidays abroad”. She also blamed the Congress party for helping Bofors accused Ottavio Quattrocchi and Bhopal gas leak accused Warren Anderson escape from India. She had earlier admitted to helping Lalit Modi’s wife travel to Portugal for cancer treatment and asked what Sonia Gandhi would have done in a similar situation.
Swaraj has also been accused of taking money to “help” the Modis and of ignoring the legal framework, which undoes her claim of helping on humanitarian grounds.
The government has ruled out Swaraj’s resignation, with Arun Jaitley claiming all charges against her are baseless. He then, as usual, went on to attack Rahul Gandhi as “an expert without any knowledge”. The adjournment motion against Swaraj was defeated in the Lok Sabha by a voice vote after Congress members walked out. “I am ready to respond to Mallikarjun Kharge’s adjournment motion in the same language that it was written in,” Sushma said.
Congress leader, Mallikarjun Kharge, has rejected the notion of Sushma Swaraj replying, instead he has asked for Narendra Modi to speak on the matter.
Outside the parliament, Rahul Gandhi said that Narendra Modi was losing his credibility due to his “failure to keep his promise on zero tolerance on corruption”. “We got no answer on the Vyapam scam, no answer on Chhattisgarh and no answer on Sushma,” he said. He also accused Modi of not having the courage to sit in the House and face tough questions.
