Based on the ‘Make in India’ campaign launched by the Indian government in 2014, which was aimed at promoting the country’s indigenous textile industries, Sui Dhaaga hits theaters today. I watched the film a while ago and here is what I liked and disliked about the new Yash Raj Films’ venture.
What’s the buzz about?
Set in the heartland of India, Sui Dhaaga revolves around fun-loving Mauji (Varun Dhawan) and his unforthcoming wife Mamta (Anushka Sharma). They are a small-town couple who is yet to break the ice. Mauji, a good for nothing chap, is a tailor by profession. But for his masters, he is nothing more than a buffoon who entertains them by acting like a dork.
Though Mauji is content with what he has to survive, he decides to change things when he sees shame in his Mamta’s eyes. Now, he dreams of becoming his own boss and earning the respect that always evaded him. But how can a man, who barely makes his both ends meet, fulfill such huge dreams?
Braving all obstacles and odds coming his way, Mauji attempts to start his own enterprise. But will he be successful? Will Mamta always stand by his side like a rock? To know this and much more head to your nearest theater.
What will touch your heart?
Sui Dhaaga is a film which restores your faith in hard work and diligence. It is an unmissable film which completely belongs to director Sharat Katariya, who has previously helmed Dum Laga Ke Haisha (2015).
Just like his last offering, he has weaved yet another magical story that stays with you for a long, long time. His powerful narrative evokes all sorts of emotions. Some scenes make you laugh, while others bring tears to your eyes. The narrative is so strong and heart-warming that boredom hardly hits you.
Talking about performance, Varun Dhawan and Anushka Sharma are bang on. They play their characters with complete honesty and deliver laudable performances. Their fresh pairing looks adorable. They light up every scene with their magical presence. Varun gets into the skin of his character and makes you laugh, and cry throughout the film.
With every movie, Dhawan is growing as a performer and that is what makes him one of the most bankable stars from the current lot. Anushka Sharma, on the other hand, is also perfect in her role. However, there are some scenes where you feel she overdoes it, but not to the extent where her act starts irritating you.
Sui Dhaaga has an extremely talented supporting cast which makes the film even more fun to watch. Raghubir Yadav is just brilliant, who brings a lot of humour with his performance.
Music by Anu Malik is excellent. Almost all the songs in the movie gel seamlessly with the narrative. They take the story forward and, most importantly, do not look forced!
What are the bummers?
When it comes to technical aspects of the film, Sui Dhaaga becomes a little slack in the second half and nothing but editing is to be blamed. Apart from that, things get predictable at various points, but since the story is narrated in such an interesting manner, you bear with its flaws without paying much heed to them.
Varun Dhawan and Anushka Sharma won’t disappoint you! Sui Dhaaga is a simple film, which becomes extraordinary fueled by excellent performance, taut writing, and skillful direction. In a nutshell, it is a feel-good film which you can enjoy with your whole family.
