The debate on the extreme religiosity of people does not seem to simmer down. A few months back, it was Sonu Nigam who received colossal backlash for criticizing the practice of praying on loudspeakers at the wee hours. Joining the league, actor and singer, Suchitra Krishnamoorthi has found a place in headlines, too.

All you have to do to invite the ire of the internet is tweet. Suchitra Krishnamoorthi voiced her displeasure at the practice of praying through blaring loudspeakers. She made a point that people who work till late, likes her who are from the entertainment industry, suffer great inconvenience.

Even if what she said sounded like a personal attack to many, in a classic move, people used slut shaming as a tool to discourage her. Instead of focusing on the point of contention, people questioned her reason to stay out of the house this late.

Suchitra stood unmoved by the hate comments but expressed sadness at the slut shaming. She identified it as one of the reasons which encourages rape culture in India. Not ashamed or fearful, she shares those tweets to highlight the hypocrisy of people who demand respect by disrespecting others:

Her husband and director, Shekhar Kapur also slammed online trolls:

However, as the events are unfolding, she is making a point to clear her stand against the imposition of religion on others.

Sharing her sentiments, many supporters are also showing up:

Suchitra accepted that her words might have come too strong but also refuses to switch sides.

Mumbai is also proactively involved in the case. Given the amount of sexually violent threats and tweets she has received so far, it has become a state of grave seriousness.

The debate needs to focus on the issue she has raised which is applicable on any Mandir or Gurudwara as well. However, the shift towards the slut shaming begs for our attention towards the brutal attacks a female voice receives every time she opens her mouth. She is a female involved in political and religious criticism; the combination is inflammable but shows her true strength.
