The Supreme Court of India has started hearing on the petitions filed against the Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code on July 10. For the uninitiated, the Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code criminalizes homosexual activities. Back in 2009, the Delhi High Court had held the Section 377 of the IPC unconstitutional but in 2013, the Supreme Court of India restored a sexual relationship between two persons of the same sex as a criminal offense. Ahead of the hearing of fresh petitions filed against the ruling, BJP leader and member of Rajya Sabha, Subramanian Swamy has made statements against homosexuality that have shocked a large section of people.

Subramanian Swamy is one of the most popular leaders of the Bhartiya Janta Party and is also one of the most followed political figures of India on the social media. Thus his statements have been condemned by a large section people, some of who have even anticipated that it could give a major setback to BJP’s image.

Ahead of the SC’s first hearing, Subramanian Swamy termed homosexuality as abnormal. The Economic Times quoted him saying:

“Sex with person of the same sex is unnatural. In Hindu tradition, we have been sympathetic to there plight. But we have never allowed them to celebrate it and to say that it is a matter of choice.”

The politician called homosexuality a genetic flaw and something that should not be celebrated. However, he went on to say that people should not be discriminated against in their social lives and economic matters because of their sexual orientation. But at the same time, he maintained:

“There is no other flaw in them other than this. And also I am against police going into somebody’s bedroom to check whether a person is male or female.”

According to Swamy, acceptance of homosexuality would lead to the establishment of gay bars in India, which is something American investors have been wanting to do in India. But it looks like his statements have not gone very well with a large section of social media users. On the other hand, there are social media users who have strongly come up in Swamy’s support.

Here is how some people have condemned his statements:
