Touted as one of the highest paid actresses of Bollywood, Deepika Padukone has completed 10 years in the industry this month. Her first film ‘Om Shanti Om’ released on November 15 and her completion of a decade makes this month very special for her. And now, the actress is gearing up for the release of ‘Padmavati’ directed and produced by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. This film in which Deepika will be seen in the titular role marks her trilogy with the director.
Based on the story of queen Padmavati, the film has been surrounded by controversies ever since the start of shooting. About two weeks away from its release, these debates around the film don’t seem to die. Organizations and individuals have claimed that Bhansali has distorted history and are demanding the release of ‘Padmavati’ to be stalled.
However, the leading lady of the film, Deepika Padukone, is convinced that the film will release as per schedule on December 1. In a recent interview to IANS, the actress addressed the debates:
“It’s appalling, it’s absolutely appalling. What have we gotten ourselves into? And where have we reached as a nation? We have regressed. The only people we are answerable to is the censor board, and I know and I believe that nothing can stop the release of this film. This is not about ‘Padmavati’… We’re fighting a much bigger battle.”
The actress also said that she never thought that she could be Bhansali’s heroine at the time she entered the film industry and that she celebrates the fact that she got to play the title role which “does not happen often in a woman’s career”.
There is no doubt that the actress has a huge fan following in the country but this time, her “we have regressed” remark has invited huge criticism on social media.
Senior BJP leader Subramanian Swamy gave an epic response to her remark, and soon a number of other social media users followed. Have a look at Swamy’s tweet below:
Cine actress Deepika Padukone giving us lecture on regression!! Nation can progress only when it is regression from her perspective.

Finding Swamy’s view apt, a number of other twitter users responded to his tweet, criticizing Deepika for her statement. Here are some of these responses:
As a woman, I shouldn’t allow a film that degrades the Queen #Padmavati honor even an atom size. If it has shown anything contrary to history, it should not only be banned, but cases should be filed against the cast & producer-director.
