In an encounter with dacoits in Chitrakoot district of Bundelkhand, Uttar Pradesh on Thursday, police sub-inspector Jai Prakash Singh was martyred while a station officer sustained injuries by gunshot. Four dacoits have been taken into custody by the police. Those arrested include Raju Kol, an important member of the Babuli Kol gang, and an injured dacoit.
The encounter took place between the teams of Chitrakoot district police and the dacoits’ gang on the early morning of Thursday at Nihi Chiraiya forest in Manikpur. When police sub-inspector Jai Prakash Singh was injured in the encounter, he was taken to the hospital but he did not survive.
Virendra Tripathi, police station officer of Bahilpurwa, sustained injuries but was soon out of danger. The Indian Express quotes ADG (Allahabad Zone), S N Sabat, on the day of encounter saying,
The encounter is taking place with the gang of dacoit Babli Kol. This is the only gang that is still active in the area. We have arrested three dacoits… Raju Kol, a key member of the gang, is among the three arrested.
The encounter teams were led by superintendent of police, Pratap Gopendra, and Balwant Chaudhary, additional superintendent of police of Chitrakoot. Operations were soon joined by police stations of other districts in Chitrakoot, Mahoba, Banda, and Hamirpur.
Reportedly, Babuli Kol is the only active gang of dacoits in the area. A prize of Rs. 5 lakh has been announced by the police on Babuli Kol whose activities have increased tremendously in the region around the border of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.
