Just days after Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi and Indian National Congress (INC) Twitter handles were hacked, a 22-year-old hacker hacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Modi App’ and exposed a major security flaw in its coding which gives the hacker access to the data of its 7 million users.

The app had just come into highlight just few days back when PM Modi had asked the nation to use his app for a survey.

The App had offered a survey containing 10 questions with regards to demonetization and had thousands of people participating in it.

Soon after that 22-year-old Javed Khatri not only cracked the Narendra Modi app but also able access data of 7 million users of the App according to a YourStory report.

Javed further sent an email to YourStory explaining the data he was able to access and said it even gave him access to the user’s phone number and location and that he was even able to access personal data of other ministers like Smriti Irani.

“I am able to access private data of any user on the app. The data includes phone number, email, name, location, interests, last seen etc. I successfully managed to extract the personal phone numbers and email ids of ministers like Smriti Irani. Not only that, I can make any user on the platform follow any other user on the platform. This is just the summary of this huge security loophole which I want to report. The privacy of more than seven million users is at stake if this gets ignored.”

Javed though added that he did not want to cause any harm or misuse this data and just wanted to demonstrate how poor the security of this app was.

He then went on to add that it was very easy for him to hack the app and even gave few screenshots to give proof of the hack being legitimate.

Just few hours after YourStory published Javed’s story, they were forced to take it down since as it had just one side of the story and as an explanation was soon published.

They had received a mail from Amit Malviya who is BJP’s National Convener – Information and Technology, who said the exposed data was in the encrypted section of the App.

Malviya also thanked Javed and said,

“We take data security very seriously, and adequate measures are in place to avoid any possible security breach or threat. We would like to thank Mr Javed Khatri for acknowledging that the developers have focused a lot on security. We have since had a constructive engagement and discussed various security measures to further enhance the security features of the app. Our digital assets are put through routine security audits and are in compliance with extant standards. In fact, we encourage anyone who has any suggestions or inputs on how we can improve the overall experience on the App is welcome to write to us through the feedback section in the App.”

To further assure the app users he added that users info is still safe as the App doesn’t capture any private or sensitive data from them.

Javed too took to Twitter to clarify that he didn’t ‘hack’ the Modi App and just made few suggestions which were later clarified to him. He also added that the App flaw has now been fixed and that was what his main aim was.
